Olive Variety
Research indicated that the Tuscan varieties of
Correggiola, Frantoio and Leccino noted for their
vigorous growth and high oil content, would best
meet anticipated market requirements. These offer
a fruity, aromatic character much sought after by
oil processors both in Australia and overseas. For
table fruit we have chosen Manzanillo, Picholine
and Kalamata.
Frantoio
The most noted olive variety of Tuscany, Italy. The oil is of fruity character,
aromatic and of excellent quality. Under the title "Paragon" the Frantoio
have well proven themselves in most olive-growing regions of Australia. One
of the most highly-acclaimed olive oil varieties of the world.
Correggiola
This tree is a vigorous grower. The fruit ripens late in the season and has
a high oil content of excellent quality. Well proven in Australian groves
over many years and sought after by oil processors.
Leccino
This olive is cultivated in all the olive growing regions of Italy. It is particularly
noted for its tolerance to adverse weather and diseases. Quality and production
is similar to Frantoio. Fruit size is medium with high oil content superbly
balanced and palatable fresh off the press.
Manzanillo
One of the most widely planted variety in Australian groves. Can be used for
both pickling and oil production. Very good flesh-to-pit ratio, fruit yields
are consistently high and fruit is easy to pickle and pit. Considered the
best dual-purpose variety available
Picholine
This olive variety is the most important French table variety. The average
oil yield of this variety is high. The tree is grown in many countries, responds
well to irrigation and is adaptable to a wide range of soils and climates.
Kalamata
The Kalamata is perhaps the most famous and well recognised olive variety in
the world. Renowned for flavour and the firmness of its flesh when pickled,
the Kalamata is a superb eating Olive. The tree is vigorous and semi erect
and has large and relatively soft leaves. The fruit is elongated and has
a characteristic bend.
